Beyond Invitation: Rethinking How Africa and Europe Work Together
A central contribution of the Governance Model is the proposal of a Sovereign Partnership Model built around three interconnected pillars: Mobility Justice, Resource Sovereignty & Ecosystem Building, and the Cycle of Return.
What does genuine partnership look like when cooperation begins with equality rather than invitation? As part of the Deconfining project, a new Intercontinental Governance Model explored this question by examining how cultural cooperation between Africa and Europe could move beyond established structures and towards more equitable forms of shared decision-making, resource distribution and artistic exchange. Developed by Samba Yonga and Vydia Tamby, edited by Sara Božanić and Malin Nagel, and led by the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) through research, evaluations and case studies gathered
throughout the Deconfining project, the Governance Model examined both the successes and the structural challenges that emerged from intercontinental cultural collaboration. The Intercontinental Governance Model is available in English and French, offering practitioners, organisations and policymakers a resource for continuing the conversation about what more equitable international cultural cooperation could look like.
