ITD and Deconfining at the 23rd International Africa Day Conference

On May 22, 2024, the 23rd International Conference on Africa Day was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, organised by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia in cooperation with the Bled Strategic Forum, the European Commission and Chatham House.

This year’s conference centred on the theme of the Green Transition, providing a significant platform for interregional exchange and cooperation. Participants discussed the potential of green technologies, sustainable practices, and eco-friendly policies to foster positive change. The event brought together decision-makers and experts from Europe and Africa, aiming to identify key challenges and policy priorities that will enhance the Green Transition and strengthen the partnership between the two continents.

Our CEO, Sara Božanić, moderated a panel titled “Strengthening Cultural Cooperation: Sustainable Networks for Sustainable Futures” aimed at exploring the role of cultural and creative sectors in driving a green future and fostering equal partnership and collaboration between Europe and Africa. The panel featured discussions on successful initiatives, innovative approaches, and opportunities for cross-continental collaboration aimed at advancing environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and mutual understanding.

The panel featured distinguished participants from the cultural sector and partners of the Institute for transmedia design in the DECONFINING project:

  • Samba Yonga: Founder of Ku-Atenga Media and co-founder of the Museum of Women’s History.
  • Vydia Tamby: Cultural Advisor to the Mayor of Dakar.
  • Barbara Eigner: International Relations Department, European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024.
  • Dr. Stojan Pelko: Head of Programme, European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica/Gorizia 2025.

The discussions at the conference aimed to inspire concrete actions and partnerships that support shared goals of sustainability and cultural cooperation. Hopefully we have sown a seed for reflection for all participants who are willing to inspire others and contribute to change.

This annual high-level event aims to improve policies for the benefit of the citizens of European and African countries, based on mutual understanding and cooperation between the two regions, and to strengthen bilateral relations between Slovenia and African countries. The event is honoured under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia.
